General Description |
 |
|
|
The Whitehouse is one of the oldest and most celebrated B&Bs in the Niagara region.
Originally started in 1983, it has been continuously run since then.
The origins of this acre lot situated in the original Olde Towne and a block from the High Street, date from the initial Olde Towne survey of the 1790`s, but the recorded surviving surveys date the construction of the West Wing of the home to the 1820`s. The home was augmented in the 1915-1920's with the East wing.
French doors off the Dining room and library/living rooms leading to the expansive lawns surrounding the home on all sides, fireplaces and over 4500 sq. ft. of space, at the Whitehouse, one is embraced by space, light, and its delicious peace and noted architecture of its origins.
You will be delighted with some of the interior architectural features that have been showcased in architectural digests and reviews.
This property has been home to a succession of owners of prominence from both the Canadian and American sides of the Niagara River.
Prior to and after the American Civil War this Niagara manor home received many prominent members of the liberal American confederacy and Northern establishment, that till the War had been eminent participants in the federal pre-war politics of Washington including a visit, in 1859,by the last Vice-president under President Lincoln, before the commencement of the hostilities of the Civil War.
Today, it remains one of the longest continuously operated Niagara-on-the-lake Bed and Breakfasts, commencing with the ownership of the Howe family in the early 1980's and under the guidance and humour of Margherita and Norman Howe and latterly by Peter Howe and his family.
In addition, the spacious living and dining rooms are most appropriate and conducive to wine and cheese tasting. Glasses, plates etc provided.
The lawns in late Spring, Summer and Autumn, are a wonderful venue to have a picnic before the Theatre or after a cycle or walk about or just to relax and read or enjoy some wine and conversation with friends or the owners.
Enjoy!
